I have been thinking of the use of mosaics in art a lot lately. Of course, there is the art of mosaics, but I wondered what I could do if I painted and drew in a mosaic style. Such fun! Here, I have sketched a bird (maybe a dove?) and used colored pencils. I also happened to be trying out a new journal, so I though I should stick with colored pencils as the paper was thin. The jury is still out on the journal, but the mosaic style is a keeper. Since this drawing, I have done a vase of florals in ... View the Post
Two Paintings: Oil Pastels on Black & VIDEO
I only like drama in art, not in life (if you know what I mean). :) When you use black paper, it really makes the oil pastels pop! I used my Dylusions journal, which has paper of the best quality. You can use a fixative to seal, or a sheet of glycine paper to prevent smudging. Of course, you could cut out the page and frame it! I added a background after the fact with future framing in mind! I didn't blend as much in this one. I love the arrangement and shape! I was inspired by ... View the Post
Oil Pastel Floral Topiary Painting & Short VIDEO
Topiary trees are such a great way to add the beauty of nature in an ornamental way. The English do gardens best, I think, with the lovely shapes and clean edges, mazes, and more! Since I can't grow things very well, I paint. :) There is a short video below! I'm using my toned tan journal with colored pencils for sketching. Oil pastels give a lush creamy, blended look. Artecho oil pastels are a recent favorite, but Mungyo is also a great choice. If you want to splurge, Sennelier is the way to ... View the Post
Oil Pastel Grecian Vase & VIDEO
I have previously posted the other art on this art journal page, and I have videos as well for some of them. I thought it was a fun art journal method to tape off sections on the toned paper and paint within those. In keeping with the Grecian-ish theme, this urn/vase was inspired by an article in a magazine. I used colored pencils for the finer details and oil pastels for the rest of the painting. VIDEO BELOW! I love nature and architecture, history and artifacts, so this was definitely fun ... View the Post
Cake Painting with Acrylic Markers
Acrylic markers are a versatile art supply. The dual-end Arrtx acrylic markers were my first set, and they are great! Card makers can color, use them in your art journal, kids can paint rocks, use them on canvases, and so much more! They are smooth and opaque, making them a great layering medium. Use them for underpaintings for you oil pastels! :) I used this cake on watercolor (Bristol) paper for a card front. I was inspired by a cake in a magazine. Draw anything! ... View the Post
Soft Pastel & Watercolor Painting
Mixed media is a great way to use your art supplies together, utilizing their strengths to advantage. Watercolors and soft pastels really work well together. Using watercolor as a light foundation, allowing it to seep into the paper for a gentle base for the soft pastel to "hold on to", is a great choice for underpaintings. I used a floral arranging book for inspiration. I love the wide spray of flowers, which is different than my usual taller design. I love using these paintings in my ... View the Post
