Oil Pastel Fish Painting & VIDEO

I have always loved looking at fish, especially the beautifully colored ones with their iridescent scales. One book that I loved to read to my kids was Rainbow Fish. He learns to share his beautiful, shiny scales. The illustrations are great! Fish are a great thing to paint, because their shape is so simple. You can focus on colors and patterns. I have also created a surface pattern design below! :) I used my trusty toned tan paper from Strathmore! I have a video below! I started by ... View the Post

Creative Abstract Painting!

I was inspired by this amazing book, Creative Abstract Watercolor by Kate Rebecca Leach. It really is a fun and inspiring abstract method! I chose a few coordinating colors and used my watercolor art journal. I wet the paper with plain water in larges stripes, then dropped in color. Let some of the colors bleed into eachother to create connections. I dropped in a second layer to make the colors more bold. When that dries, I added details with a white gel pen and black Micron. I ... View the Post

Oil Pastel Squirrel Warrior Painting

Animal storybook characters have always been a favorite. :) To this day, when I go to a bookstore, I love to peruse the children's storybook shelves. I love the variety of artwork used in storytelling. Kids really do remember things well with visual aids (and adults too). There is something precious about personified animals, in a Narnian sense. I was very sad at what the government did to Peanut the Squirrel. It's exactly the sort of nonsensical evil that infuriates us all. This squirrel ... View the Post

Oil Pastel Painting: Down the Autumn Road

The following few pictures show some of the steps in painting this landscape using colored pencils and oil pastels. I taped off the sides so that I would have a clean finish at the end. I blocked in color with the colored pencils. This gives an opportunity to block in colors, as well as saves having too many oil pastel layers that can sometimes become messy. It always looks like second grade art class in the beginning. :) I smoothed out the pastels in the sky, road, and grass. I ... View the Post

Arrtx Acrylic Marker Paintings-Postage Stamps

These Arrtx acrylic markers are fun to use in my Royal Talens Art Creations art journal! The paper is smooth and thick enough to hold the acrylic paint well. I was in the mood to paint my own "vintage" postage stamps, inspired by some photos of old stamps in a magazine. The last picture was just a fun winter scene around Christmas time. Acrylic markers are a versatile art supply that can be used on a wide variety of surfaces. ... View the Post

Soft Pastel Botanicals & VIDEO

These paintings are from 2023 that I somehow didn't post. I was on my soft pastels "kick" and was experimenting with them on different papers and on top of watercolor. They aren't the best of results, but the journey of discovery is still fun! I have a VIDEO at the bottom of the post of a much more successful application! :) ... View the Post
