You often hear me mention Strathmore's Toned Tan Paper, because it is among my favorite art supplies. Strathmore also makes a Toned Gray paper! I don't use it as much as the tan because I tend to work in warmer colors more often than not, but it is also great to use. Here are a couple of oil pastel paintings that I did several months ago (and never were published). This paper can hold a lot of media, so long as the water content isn't overwhelming. Creamy pastels, gouache, and acrylics are ... View the Post
Vintage Fruit & Designs
I was inspired to paint these from a vintage photo of fruit in an old art book (of course, I always have to include flowers as well). Fruit is fun to paint because of the variety of colors and shapes found in nature! I used Inktense pencils here, but of course, you can use watercolor, gouache, and even oil pastels for a similar look. I've entered the Forest Biome contest at Spoonflower! I wouldn't mind a vote. :) ... View the Post
Oil and Soft Pastel Bouquet & Blue Flower
Here are two oil and soft pastel paintings, one of which is a pattern (shown below). Oil pastels are amazing, and if you haven't tried them, you should. They aren't that expensive to get a decent set, so it's not a risky investment. They are creamy, giving amazing texture to your work. I also use them with soft pastels, watercolor, colored pencils, and acrylics! My favorite oil pastels! ... View the Post
Edgar Allan Crow Collection
This Edgar Allan Crow collection is all based off of a crow that I painted on one dreary Poe-like day. :) I created seamless patterns with ink splatters (a nod to the Poet), and used software to turn the crow into various geometric, seamless patterns. You can find the collection on Patreon and Etsy in digital form. I also sell some of these designs as fabric on Spoonflower! ... View the Post
Oil Pastel Bird Nest Painting
One of my favorite art books is Painting Nature with Clare. She has a lovely style. I thought I would try her bird nest, since I love the colors teal and brown together. I painted on Starthmore's Toned Tan paper. I used oil pastels. My favorites are Mungyo and Paul Rubens. They are creamy and still easy to layer. Colored Pencils also work well with oil pastels and can give added details that can be hard to add with "chubby" oil pastel sticks. ... View the Post
Loose, Bright Watercolor in Art Journal
This painting is done in a loose watercolor style, so much so that there aren't even any outlines. That is not common for me, but the Rosa Gallery paints are so highly pigmented, that they can stand on their own! I worked in my very small art journal. The pressure is off! Art journals aren't very intimidating, so there is more freedom to create. Seamless pattern example is below! ... View the Post
