Acrylic Painting in the One Stroke Style

Acrylic paint is great to work with. It's water-based, opaque, and easy to use. I love the bold colors that I can get, which are hard for me to achieve with watercolor. I have some strong colors here, which I combined with another painting to make the pattern you can see a few photos down. If you don't care for the shine that comes with acrylic, then gouache may be for you. SHORT VIDEO HERE This is an off-shoot of the one stroke method of combining multiple paint colors on your brush a ... View the Post

Peaceful Ocean Sailboat with Soft Pastels

I have always loved the water. It is powerful and peaceful at the same time. Though this piece has a bit of bleeding and a tear, I still love it! Soft pastels are so easy to use and leave wonderful texture! Below are some of the steps to achieve this end. Of course, you can use pastel paper, but I have found that decent watercolor paper also provides great "tooth" for the pastels. ... View the Post

Hand-Painted Cards

I've been painting a lot on quality papers that aren't necessarily designed for paints. Since acrylic paint doesn't need a lot of water, it's a perfect choice for black drawing paper or Strathmore's Toned Tan paper. Simply trim to size and mount on a card blank. I also like to take the leftover paint and mimic the design on the envelope. Acrylic, and also gouache, is perfect for surviving the sometimes postal abuse and elements. ... View the Post

Purple Forest Acrylic & Pastel Painting

Well, we are undergoing our second stint this year without power, inspite of the weekly emails hailing the awesome infrastructure DTE has invested in (with our rate increases). Therefore, work and cooking is greatly limited. In the meantime, I enjoyed painting this mixed media piece a couple of months ago. It is a 16 x 20 inch canvas with an acrylic underpainting. Then I added layers and layers of soft pastels. I still feel like it isn't finished, but sometimes you have to step back for a while ... View the Post

Mythical Creatures Drawing Challenge & Video

This is a fun drawing game, Createures, that is great for art prompts and teaching art classes. You randomly pick from different categories, then draw a creature that meets those card prompts. There are thousands of variations you could draw. With few supplies needed, this is a great tool for artists and teachers that also travels well! ... View the Post

Old Bridge in Oil Pastel

Starting with a watercolor wash to block in the background, I then began to draw in the tower of the bridge. This was inspired by a beautiful photograph in a magazine. I added flowers and bushes along the bank. The oil pastels layer wonderfully on the watercolor background. This was all done on regular watercolor paper. Oil pastels are a joy to use. They are buttery and give great texture! ... View the Post
