This set of Mungyo Watercolor Crayons is a decent replacement if you don’t want to (or can’t) invest in Caran D’Ache . A set of 40 in Caran D’Ache runs around $100, whereas the Mungyo set of 36 is about $28 at Walmart. I used them for the underpainting and left the bold background (see pics below) as is after being activated by water. Then, I used oil pastels for the lady, along with gold details with Sennelier.
All of this to say, use different supplies together for the best advantage. 🙂 This Canson toned paper works really well with so many supplies. I taped the edges off with washi for a clean finish. I like to do a basic sketch with a charcoal pencil. I started with Jane Davenport face stencils and went from there.

The yellow and orange background was made from the watercolor crayons, then using a paintbrush with water to create a smooth, bold look. The pigment iswonderfully saturated!

You can probably get her face stencils on her website, but I highly recommend THIS BOOK for her faces as well as so many other instructional tips!
