Sometimes, I like to change it up by painting on black. I used my art journal by Dyan Reaveley, which is square and has great quality paper. Oil pastels and colored pencils work beautifully on this sturdy paper. I used these painted motifs to create a surface pattern design that can be purchased in wallpaper or fabric at Spoonflower. I love the dramatic impact that a black background delivers! I have a process video at the bottom of this post. Here is the surface pattern design that I ... View the Post
Oil Pastel Butterfly Painting
Butterflies are my favorite insect. They are beautiful, gentle, and don't bite you and inject poisonous venom into your bloodstream. :) There are so many color variations! I think this one is a Rajah Brooke's birdwing (sort of-kind of). I love using Sennelier's copper oil pastel for final details to represent the iridescent look in butterfly wings. I mostly used Artecho oil pastels in my Strathmore toned tan paper art journal. This first photo shows the butterfly before adding the shiny ... View the Post
Oil Pastel Hoopoe Painting
The hoopoe is such an interesting bird! They are colorful and have a "crown" that they can raise and lower. Sadly, we don't have these in Michigan, but what fun they are to paint! I've used Artecho oil pastels in my Strathmore toned tan paper journal. I didn't add a background this time, but the oil pastels were perfect for the bits of colors in the feathers. You can use colored pencils for the small detail work. I have a short video at the bottom of the post and a few step-by-step ... View the Post
Oil Pastel Bunny Painting & VIDEO!
Bunnies are always in abundance in my yard. One time, I found a bunch of baby bunnies at the base of a pine tree, surrounded by the most soft gray fur. They were so cute! I used my Strathmore toned tan paper journal and my oil pastels to paint this cutie. :) I also used a charcoal pencil and my Prismacolor colored pencils for the detail work. I have a video at the bottom of the post! Oil pastels are such a great way to bring out fur and the soft texture of animals. The creamy pastels layer ... View the Post
Oil Pastel Daisy Painting on Abstract Background
This painting is done in a very different style than I usually gravitate towards. The background is very abstract (and dare I say, has a 1990s feel), with bits of gold by using Sennelier's Iridescence set of oil pastels. It was fun to try in my Strathmore toned tan paper journal. The beauty of art journals is that there is a place to experiment and explore with art supplies. Oil pastels are great for mark-making in conjunction with paints as well! I have mostly used Artecho and Paul ... View the Post
Oil Pastel Pink Swan Painting & VIDEO
This was a fun one to paint! I mostly used Artecho oil pastels in this painting in my Strathmore toned tan art journal. Artecho has some lovely pastel shades, which can sometimes be harder to find in some oil pastel sets. I have a video at the bottom of this post, and over 1,700 videos on my channel. I hope you check it out. :) Swans are so elegant, floating away on the ponds amongst the reeds. Ah, to have a bird's easy, peaceful life! :) Those minty greens are amazing! Artecho ... View the Post
