Here are some step-by-step photos of my colored pencils underpainting with oil pastels on top. This cozy living room was fun! Using colored pencils for the underpainting can really help with a painting that has smaller spaces to define, and make it easy to use the oil pastels later in the process. Try this living room scene in a different color palette and your own pet portrait! 🙂
I used Canson Graduate XL in gray for this painting, and taped off the edges in washi for a clean finish.




I am starting to add the oil pastels. I love the creamy coverage that they bring to a painting


Adding Sennelier gold for the frame and some of the other details is one of my favorite parts. I love art supplies that add a lot with just a little.


I added some white to “distress” the walls a bit to give them some age and depth.
