Oil Pastels are the best when you want textured bird feathers and complex layering of color! I have a VIDEO at the bottom of the post, so please check that out. 🙂 I used toned paper from Canson. Blick always has great deals on their pads in cream, gray, and black. The paper is perfect for oil pastels, colored pencils, and gouache. I love using it. I also used touches of Sennelier silver for a lovely sparkle!
I tend to paint a creamier background with the foreground being more textured. Oil pastels are versatile in this way, and they really can perform in a wide spectrum of methods. Even lesser expensive pastels perform wonderfully, so they are a low-risk medium to try if you have been hesitant.

I love this color palette! Winter blues with pops of color. 🙂
