Oil Pastel Chubby Bird Painting on Toned Paper

I do love painting birds. They have such a beautiful variety of colors and shapes. I tend toward the chubby ones. :) I painted this little guy on Strathmore toned tan paper. I first sketched the basic shape, then blocked in the colors with oil pastels. I smoothed out the pastels, then added more detail on top (see pictures below). I also have a short video at the bottom of the post. I like the blue and ochre palette, as it is calming and classic. These few step-by-step photos show a bit of ... View the Post

Oil Pastel Sepia Landscape Painting & VIDEO

The challenge for this painting was to keep myself to a simple, sepia-like palette with just flecks of coral. It is a bit clunky, but overall I love how it turned out. It's a bit moody, like a forgotten barn in an abandoned field. I used Canson mixed media paper and mostly Mungyo Gallery oil pastels with a few Paul Rubens and Artecho. Each set of oil pastels has some amazing colors to offer unique from the others, so it is nice to have multiple sets. :) Choose a limited color palette and ... View the Post

Oil Pastel Cubism Castle & VIDEO

Cuisbm is not an art style that I usually am inspired by, but it seemed like a fun challenge to paint a castle in a "light Cubism" style. I mostly used Artecho oil pastels along with some Paul Rubens oil pastels on a pad of Canson Graduate XL paper in a creamy color. I taped the sides with washi for a clen edge finish. Check out the video at the bottom of the post! Cubism came alive in the early 20th century. You might know a man named Pablo Picasso. His art is not my thing, but the Cubism ... View the Post

Bright Floral Oil Pastel Painting & VIDEO

Using oil pastels on a black background can give new inspiration, and I love this bright palette! I used Strathmore black paper that is a great weight. It would be lovely for colored pencils, acrylic, and gouache as well! The Artecho brand of oil pastels has some lovely colors. I mostly used that set for this floral motif. I finished with metallic accents using Sennelier oil pastels. I love to turn these motifs into surface pattern designs that I use in paper crafting and interior design at ... View the Post

Kuretake Granulating Watercolors Set 2 & VIDEO

Kuretake has come out with a second set of granulating watercolors. The first set (find here) was so stunning that I was excited when I heard that they finally released a second set. :) I made a video painting with the first set. The have luscious, moody hues. The new set is fairly different, in that there is more of a color spectrum. The picture below shows the difference between the colors in the two sets. I am working in a watercolor (100% cotton) paper art journal that comes in a set of ... View the Post

Oil Pastel Pear Still Life Painting & VIDEO

I don't know what it is about artists and pears, but we sure like to paint them! I am using Mungyo Gallery oil pastels, a couple of my favorite Paul Rubens, and gold details with Sennelier. I love the feel of a simple table, green hues, and a few specks of color on the pear. Oil pastels work wonderfully in my Strathmore toned tan paper art journal. Sometimes, we just have to go back to the basics and remember why we love to paint. Check out the VIDEO at the bottom of the post! :) I ... View the Post
