Painting with Bottled Inks

I love bottled inks. Firstly, the bottles themselves are beautiful. It's like having an artist's apothecary, the act of creating being good for the soul. Secondly, they last a long time! The only downside is that I usually end up wearing the ink, but it can't be helped. :) I love many brands, so I mix-and-match. Swatching them is fun. Here are some pictures. I love how they change colors in a natural way as they dry. Some even have a bit of shimmer! ... View the Post

Pastel Bunny Painting & Video

This bunny painting started out with soft pastels. I like to use other media for the underpainting, since my oil pastels are so buttery. Eventually, they can be harder to layer. That is the beauty of mixed media art! I love the vintage vibe that I ended up with, as if he belongs in a children's book. Maybe I'll tackle a picture book at some point! VIDEO HERE Using some of my recent paintings in soft and oil pastels, I created this garden-themed pattern design. Since I can't grow a ... View the Post

“One Stroke” Acrylic Painting & Video

Here is a fun c-shaped painting in the "one stroke" style. This is a method by Donna Dewberry whereby you load your paintbrush with a couple of colors at a time. It's easy to do and adds insant shading and interest to the painting. VIDEO BELOW! I love Strathmore's toned tan paper! ... View the Post

Smudge Flowers in Oil Pastels

Once you start using oil pastels, it is difficult to stop. They are buttery and creamy, giving your artwork that a look of texture and blending. You can use them on paper and canvas. They also work well with other forms of media. I use them with watercolors, acrylic, colored pencils, and soft pastels. Oil pastels are amazing to use. One of their uses is the "smudged" look, which gives a sort of ethereal look. It also gives a natural, unplanned quality. It's a great way to experiment and ... View the Post

Watercolor Moth in Mini Art Journal

Moths and butterflies are my favorite insects. I love their colors and shapes. My drawing is fictitious, of course, but fun. I used a waterproof pen, watercolors and a beautiful gold shimmer paint for extra whimsy. The small watercolor art journal has great paper. SHORT VIDEO HERE ... View the Post
